Super Bowl food begs for Cheesy, Meaty Goodness. These are the calzones from my childhood, but they are not the typical calzones with sauce in them, that you may be familiar with. These delicious calzones are layered with tangy provolone cheese and assorted meats. They are hearty, tasty, and Super Bowl worthy.
Stuff to Make 2 large Calzones
Pizza Dough (2 large balls)
*I love this foolproof recipe from Fine Cooking – you only need half the recipe, so you can freeze the other half for another time
Provolone Cheese slices (about 1 pound)
Salami or soppresatta (about 5 oz)
Pepperoni (about 5 oz)
Ham (about 6 oz)
*Try different fillings – swap out the provolone for mozzarella (not fresh), or add some roasted red peppers. Make it your own.
Stretch out or roll out your dough into a large, thin (but not too thin that you’re getting holes) rectangle. Starting with meat, layer your meats and cheeses on one half of the dough. Fold the other half over and pinch together the edges. Bake in a 425 degree oven for about 20 minutes or so.
On Sunday, don’t forget about the classics like pigs in a blanket, 7 layer dip, and tater tot nachos – some of my favs!
“If a 99-pound girl eats 1 pound of nachos, she is 1% nacho.”
